Gower College Swansea student Laura Davies has a special trip to London pencilled in her 2011 diary.

Laura, who completed a BTEC National Diploma in Public Services this summer, will be presented with her Duke of Edinburgh’s Gold award from a member of the royal family.

The coveted Gold Award is split into five sections – skill, physical achievement, service to the community, expedition and residential experience.

As part of her programme Laura volunteered in a local charity shop, participated in Swansea University’s summer school and joined a college expedition to the Cairngorms.

“It was great to be given the opportunity to take and complete the Duke of Edinburgh Gold Award,” says Laura, whose ambition is to join the police force after university.

“We are absolutely delighted with Laura’s success,” adds lecturer Marcus Richardson. “She always maximised every opportunity that came her way and quickly rose to be one of the upper echelons of her group.”

Laura will receive her award in the presence of the HRH The Duke of Edinburgh or HRH The Earl of Wessex at a royal palace.
