Here you are.

You, with the face I know better than my own.
With the awkward smile imagined for so long.

I wonder if you have been wondering,
Like I have,
Whether slowly, quietly,
Something could emerge from this silence
If we could only break it?

I am always wondering.

What can I say to you?

You, whose expectant eye meets mine now.
Face to face,
I wish, I hope,
For what?

Something brilliant.
Something real.
Something indefinite.

Rehearsed words float away.
Time stands still;
Looking at his watch,
Waiting for someone, to say something.

For a moment, without saying anything
Your lips tell of summer days gone by;
Of kissing in the rain,
Of smiles so big the face cannot contain them;
Of saying goodbye,
Of tearful frowns.

I want them to say hello, and they do.
A lightning bolt.
But inevitably reality rains down,
And I know that it may be too soon,
Or too late
For us, for now
To start, or finish, what we are trying to say.

What can I say?

Pen to paper, poised,
I realised that the answer escapes me.

Closing my eyes,
Wishing for words,
I know that when I open them you will not be there.
That, for now,
Sweetly, but speechlessly,
Our eyes shall meet only in imagination.
