Animal Cruelty Must Stop
Walk through any park in the Swansea area and I'm sure you will see animal lovers with their dogs, playing ball and generally having an enjoyable walk.
These dog walkers give their animals the love and attention they deserve.
However, many animals do not get the same treatment. Thousands of animals in the UK are abandoned every day and many have suffered unthinkable cruelty.
Cruelty towards animals has become an increasing problem in our society. I'm sure all animal lovers out there will agree that cruelty to animals is totally unnecessary and an unacceptable form of violence.
Firstly, animals cannot defend themselves against a human who is determined to harm them. They cannot tell anyone of the pain they are suffering or accuse their abusers. Animals place trust in their owners and are totally reliant on them for food, warmth, a bed, company and numerous other things.
When this trust is abused, an animal faces a lonely life filled with fear every time their tormentor comes near.
Research has shown that those who commit domestic violence against others, and those who have suffered forms of violence as children, are more likely to carry out cruelty towards animals.
The RSPCA and other charities alike work to try to give animals a voice and help to rescue and rehabilitate those who have suffered abuse. In 2009 they received a call every 25 seconds relating to stories about cruelty.
The charity takes care of the animals, tries to build their trust in humans again and their main goal is to find a loving home for an abandoned animal so that they can proceed to living a life full of happiness.
Last year the RSPCA re-homed around 90,000 cats, dogs and smaller animals, and investigated nearly 145,000 cruelty cases - a figure which is far too high.
It takes half a million pounds to run one animal shelter here in the UK, and charities are desperate for volunteers, finance and any help from the public.
I understand that most users on this site are students and may struggle with money, therefore I urge all the animal lovers out there to give just a little of their time to volunteer for an animal charity, and help an animal to trust in humans again.
