Notice your employer must give you

  • Most workers have the right to be given notice if their employer wants to stop their employment.
  • Your legal rights depend on how long you have worked for your employer. You are entitled to:
    • One weeks notice when you have been working for your employer for between one month and two years
    • One weeks notice for each whole year you have worked, if you have worked for your employer for between two years and twelve years.
    • Twelve weeks notice if you have worked for your employer for twelve years or more.
  • In addition to these legal rights you may also have further rights provided by your contract of employment.

Notice you must give your employer

  • The minimum amount of notice you must give is one week when you've worked for your employer for one month or more.
  • If your contract of employment requires you to give more notice than one week then you should give it.
