You might have heard or taken part in the Welsh Baccalaureate, which is an exciting qualification that adds a valuable new dimension to the subjects and courses already available to 14 to 19 year-old students.

It combines personal development skills with existing qualifications like A Levels, NVQs and GCSEs to make one wider award that is recognised and valued by employers, universities and other higher education institutions.

The Welsh Baccalaureate is valued because it helps to develop learners’ personal skills. These skills are essential if you are to do well when you leave school and start a job or go on to further education.

Over 200 centres in Wales are approved to offer the Welsh Baccalaureate qualification to some 53,000 learners from September 2010.

In September this year the Welsh Government's Deputy Minister For Skills announced a review of qualifications. The review will consider how to ensure that the qualifications system in Wales is understood, valued and meets the needs of young people and the Welsh economy.

Part of the review will consider whether the Welsh Baccalaureate Qualification should be graded, and you are invited to complete a short survey to share your thoughts.

The survey can be completed in just a few minutes, here.

'welsh bacc' and 'exciting' should never be put in the same sentence. A grading system may increase its credibilty somewhat, but a rethink of the whole qualification is needed really.
