Calling all photographers!!

For a second year, Swansea Bay Futures (the not for profit, independent company which works to raise the profile of the region) is running the fantastic photography competition, which invites residents and visitors of all ages to capture in film the great quality of life and surroundings of the Swansea Bay region.

The competition launches on 1st July and runs until noon on 30th October, 2009.

There are 3 categories to choose from (Coast, Countryside, City / Urban life) plus a special category for under-16s. Entries must have people in them, and must be taken somewhere that is within SwanseaBay – which includes Carmarthenshire, Neath Port Talbot and Swansea!

‘People out and about enjoying Swansea Bay’ could be – mountain biking, enjoying a picnic, shopping in one of the towns, villages or markets, walking, enjoying the nightlife, swimming, watching a sports match, horse riding, flying a kite, having dinner at a restaurant, being entertained by arts or cultural events, having coffee at a scenic café, strolling in a park or just sitting, relaxing and enjoying the many lovely views….the list is endless!

Once the entries close on 30th October, the judges will have the tough decision of who will walk away with the overall competition ‘Bay of Life’ prize of £100, and the Coast, Countryside, City / Urban Life and Under 16s category prizes of £50 each! The judging panel will be made up of representatives from The Evening Post, 96.4FM The Wave and Swansea Bay Futures.

As well as the monetary prizes, each category winner also receives a professionally framed A4 copy of their photograph, whilst all of the winning and highly commended entries will be enlarged, mounted and exhibited at a public exhibition in the Frontier Gallery of the NationalWaterfrontMuseum, Swansea, between 28th November 2009 and 10th January 2010.

The winning and some highly commended entries will be used as e-cards on the SwanseaBay promotional website www.abayoflife.com. Swansea Bay Futures may even purchase copyright of some of the photos, as they did for over 20 images last year, so that they can be used to help advertise SwanseaBay! One of last year’s entries is now welcoming visitors to Wales as it has been used in a 4 metre x 1.5 metre illuminated lightbox in CardiffAirport baggage reclaim hall. Whilst several other 2008 entries have been used in the brand new SwanseaBay screensaver, free to download from www.abayoflife.com/en/screen-saver/

Further information, last year’s winners as examples of what the judges will be looking for, entry forms and full terms & conditions are available at www.abayoflife.com/photographycompetition. Those without access to a computer can ring Swansea Bay Futures on 01792 634546 who will send you entry forms in the post.

So next time you go out, don’t forget to take your camera and see if you can bag yourself a prize, a spot in a public exhibition and the chance to see your image being used to help promote the Swansea Bay region!

Here are a few competition rules, if you would like to know more please click HERE

  • Entries should include people, (not just empty landscapes), must be taken somewhere within the SwanseaBay region and show some of the stunning natural and built environment of the area (as opposed to just close ups on people)
  • Where a person is clearly identifiable in the photograph a model release form must be completed and submitted with the entry form. Model release forms are available at www.abayoflife.com
